Episode 1- Spring Garden Prep
With gardening season around the corner, host Coleen Rajotte removes her lawn as she prepares to plant a tomato garden in her front yard. Colleen also blesses her seeds and does some seasonal chores to gear up for another prosperous growing season.
Episode 2- Coleen Plants her Garden
Winnipeg is in the middle of a heatwave and Coleen’s garden is dry and full of clumps. Gardening guru Gary Martens shows Coleen how to use a rototiller, which turns out to be a hilarious process. Coleen also plants asparagus for the first time.
Episode 3- Ancient Variety of Indigenous Squash
Coleen’s seeds aren’t germinating, so she must resow them in mid-June. She plants an ancient variety of Indigenous squash and explores the positive effects of gardening on mental health.
Episode 4- How to Grow Tomatoes
Coleen sows heritage tomato seeds indoors during the final days of winter. She explains how to start seeds, care for the seedlings, harden off the growing plants and eventually transplant them into the ground.
Episode 5- Saving Basil for the Winter
Coleen discovers she has a bumper crop of basil, which her gardening apprentice, Taralee, helps her harvest, wash and process. Taralee has recently been diagnosed with cancer and explains how gardening helps with her stress management.
Episode 6- Gathering a Sacred Medicine in The North
Coleen travels to Manigotagan in eastern Manitoba to learn about a thriving Métis community garden project. Elder Charles Simard teaches Coleen how to harvest black diamond willow fungus, a sacred medicine.
Episode 7- How to grow the 4 Sacred Medicines
Coleen plants a patch of tobacco in her front garden in her quest to grow the four sacred medicines and learn their teachings. She also visits Gordon Cameron to learn how to grow sweetgrass and brings home a gifted plant to put into her garden.
Episode 8- Savour Delicious Fall Harvest recipes
Coleen harvests ripe tomatoes and iron-rich beets from the garden. Some will be eaten, and some will be shared with friends. Whatever is left will be processed to be enjoyed during the long winter months.
Episode 9- The Fall Feast
Coleen completes her annual harvest and joins a group of Elders to celebrate the fall equinox with a ceremony and feast. Coleen prepares delicious fall recipes, including Three Sisters soup, which is made from corn, beans and squash.
